What is an LLM?

The LL.M is the abbreviated form of Latin Magister Legum or Legum Magister. Literally, LLM means Masters of Laws, a 2-year post-graduate degree in Law. LLM is a specialized course offered by Law Universities. It allows a law graduate to be specialized in one of the many legal sub-streams. After the completion of the degree, the candidates become experts in the field of legal affairs of the country.

Therefore, only the law graduates can apply for it. Each recognized university sets a minimum aggregate mark to get admission to it.

There are over 200 law schools in India, offering LLM courses in different legal sub-streams.

LLM entrance test

The admission process in LLM course is tough enough. Candidates are selected through a number of entrance tests named as CLAT (Common Law Admission Test), AILET (All India Law Entrance Test) and LSAT (The Law School Admission Test). The application forms for 2019 will be available in the month of May.

The question paper contains 150 questions. Questions can be both subjective and objective in nature. Candidates are to complete 150 questions in 2 hours. An objective type question carries 1 mark. 0.25 is deducted for each wrong answer. Apart from the objective type questions, there are 4 long essay type questions carrying 25 marks each.

An LL.M. program lasts for two years. The average cost or tuition fee for this postgraduate program ranges from INR 1 to 6 Lac, depending on the type of institute. After the completion of the course, the candidate can find employment in any sector that requires legal advisors.
